The field of Design Theory and Methodology has a rich collection of research results that has been taught at educational institutions as well as applied to design practices. First, this keynote paper describes some methods to classify them. It then illustrates individual theories and methodologies focusing on industrial and educational use.

Product design and development / Karl T. Ulrich, Steven D. Eppinger. This book contains material developed for use in an interdisciplinary graduate course on product development that have been taught at MIT. It blends the perspectives of marketing, design, and manufacturing into a single approach to product development. The chapter on Robust Design (also called the Taguchi method) explains the techniques for design of experiments that minimizes the effects of variations on product performance. The chapter on patents and intellectual property explains what is patentable, how the patenting process works, licensing issues, and the many types of intellectual property.
